Knightsbridge, SW1X and SW7: the long evening between Brompton Road and the park

Shop fronts by day, garden squares by night

The district is easiest to understand as three strips. The park strip along Knightsbridge itself holds the grand hotels and the apartment buildings that face the trees, and it is where most of the evenings on this page begin. The retail strip along Brompton Road carries Harrods and Harvey Nichols and thins out after closing into something far more pleasant to walk. Behind both lies the residential grain: Beauchamp Place with its small restaurants, Pont Street in red brick, Montpelier and Hans Place in white stucco around locked gardens.

Knightsbridge is not a nightlife district and does not pretend to be. What it has instead is rooms: hotel bars that stay civil past midnight, dining rooms that keep serving, and a great many private drawing rooms above the shopfronts. The evening happens indoors, and the street outside stays nearly silent.

It borders Hyde Park on one side and South Kensington on the other, so a guest here can be at the Serpentine in ten minutes or at the museums in twelve. Our companions use both facts. A walk before dinner is a genuinely good idea in this quarter, and the ones who live here will suggest it unprompted.

Where guests ask us to come

SW1X 7LA faces the park behind its terracotta front and is the address written to us most often in this district. Wilton Place, at SW1X 7RL, keeps its rooftop pool and a famously busy bar downstairs. SW7 1DW sits at the museum end and is the most modern room of the group, all dark stone and quiet lifts. The tower on Cadogan Place, SW1X 9PY, looks down over one of the largest private gardens in London.

Two smaller houses complete the usual list: SW1X 7LY, a narrow art deco building on the Hyde Park Corner kerb, and SW3 1PT, tucked into Beaufort Gardens where almost nobody thinks to look for a hotel at all.

None of those hotels has any arrangement with this house, and we would decline one if it were offered. A companion attends as the guest of the person who invited her and behaves exactly as such. A good half of the bookings here are private addresses regardless: an apartment above Brompton Road, a house on a Montpelier street, a flat behind a porter on Cadogan Place.

Stations, minutes and the car to the kerb

Knightsbridge station sits in the middle of everything, about 1 minute from Brompton Road and on the Piccadilly line. Hyde Park Corner, also Piccadilly, is roughly 5 minutes from the eastern end. Sloane Square, with the Circle and District lines, lies about 9 minutes south along Sloane Street on foot, which is a pleasant walk in dry weather and a long one in rain.

Your companion does not use any of them. She arrives by car at the door, at the minute agreed, and because SW1X and SW7 sit deep inside the first two fare zones her travel is already inside the figure. Beyond Zone 2 the taxi fare both ways is quoted to you as one number before you say yes to anything, and nothing is ever added afterwards.

An evening at a Heathrow or Gatwick hotel is arranged differently, at three hours or longer, with her travelling time counted inside that. In Knightsbridge none of it applies: the ordinary tariff holds, and the fee is settled with her in person when she reaches you.

The kind of evening asked for here

Guests writing from this district tend to want length rather than speed. A suite above the park, dinner reserved somewhere within walking distance, and three or four hours that do not need managing. Delphine sees a great many two and three hour bookings from SW1X, and dinner dates at £900 rather more often than anywhere else on this list.

Many are in London for a few days between other cities and have had a long day of rooms with no character in them. What they ask for is company that reads a room accurately and does not need to be steered. That is the specific quality this house selects for, and it is why nobody here is in a hurry.

The women who walk this district

Bianka lives a short walk from the museums and will propose a counter seat where she can watch a kitchen work while she talks. Margo has been here long enough to hold opinions about how it has changed, and likes the fifth floor at Harvey Nichols early, before the room fills. Sonya keeps to one dining room she has known for years and walks the length of Brompton Road afterwards.

Violetta and Patricia are ten minutes east across Belgravia and come over often. Anyone else in the Salon attends Knightsbridge at the same figures, since where a companion sleeps changes her journey and never her tariff.

Where the district runs out

East across Sloane Street, the stucco squares of Belgravia trade shop windows for embassy flags and silence. South, at the bottom of that same street, the small hotels around Sloane Square open onto the King's Road. The whole of the eastern half of this district shares its postcode with the SW1 addresses, which is the page to read if your own address begins that way. South Kensington and Chelsea lie immediately beyond, and Hyde Park is simply the other side of the road.
