Four women past thirty, and the ease that arrives with it
Four of the twenty eight are past thirty and not one of them would go back. The ease is the point of them: a woman who has been doing this for a decade runs a difficult dinner so lightly that nobody at the table notices her doing it.

Nancy at 30: golden blonde, and never hurried
Nancy is curvy at 170 cm with blue eyes and a calm, deliberate way of speaking. She is genuinely curious about whoever is in front of her, she keeps the same corner table whenever she can have it, and she finishes an evening with a circuit of the gardens on Berkeley Square.

Margo at 31: direct, and done with softening things
Margo, slim and 166 cm, wears her dark brown dead straight and has a gaze that does not move. She will tell you when she disagrees and she will not sulk when you disagree back. Thirty one suits her considerably better than twenty five did, and she will say so unprompted. Her evening starts at six on the fifth floor in Knightsbridge, while the light still comes through the glass, and continues on foot through Hans Place and the squares behind Sloane Street.

Sonya at 32: the calmest company here
Sonya, athletic and 162 cm, is dark brown and hazel eyed, slow and authoritative in the way she speaks, and carries the upright bearing that ballet leaves behind. The same table in the same room has done her for years now, and she sees no reason on earth to change either. The room is in Knightsbridge, and afterwards she walks the length of Brompton Road towards the museums before cutting back through the small streets to the south.

What a decade of evenings changes
Mostly it is the plain statement at the start. Each of the four says early what she prefers, so that nobody spends the evening guessing. Nancy treats three hours as her shortest length. Margo starts at six and tends to run long rather than short. Sonya keeps a short diary that fills a few days ahead, and Violetta takes one evening a night and likes it arranged well in advance. None of that is fussiness; it is simply knowing what makes an evening go well.

Choosing among the four
Nancy is the most generous listener and suits a guest who would rather talk about theatre than about work. Violetta is the most formal and, at 178 cm, the tallest, and she suits a grand room. Margo is the most direct and suits somebody who enjoys being disagreed with. Sonya is the calmest and suits a difficult week. Margo and Sonya share Knightsbridge, so if the district is fixed, the choice is between directness and calm.
