Nine women from 172 cm up, and not one of them stooping
Seven women in the circle stand at 173 cm or more, the tallest at 178, and every one of them stopped apologising for the height somewhere in her early twenties. Two more, Angelika and Patricia, stand at 172, a single centimetre short of that line, and are included because nobody across a dinner table has ever been able to tell the difference.
Height reads quite differently on a narrow frame than on a generous one, so the nine are given below with build and colouring alongside rather than as a column of numbers.

Violetta at 178 cm: tall and slender, sleek and black
Violetta is 30, the black hair worn sleek and straight, the delivery formal and plain about what she wants. She takes a table with a view of the fire in Belgravia, eats a good deal more than her frame suggests, and needs help from nobody with any room she enters.

Stacy at 176 cm: slim, near black, sharper than she looks
Stacy is 22 and quick, the hair so dark a brown that photographs of her rarely show it as brown at all, the delivery fast and precise. Her theatre is the one on the corner of Sloane Square. She takes the stalls, reads the programme before the lights go down, and has the second act judged well before the curtain call.

Milena at 175 cm: curvy, black to the waist
Milena is 25 and does nothing at all to reduce the height. She moves slowly, sits very still, and a busy room settles slightly around her. Her evening is a window table on Sloane Square and the ten minute walk down towards the river that always takes twenty.

Karolina and Samanta, both 174 cm
Karolina is 27, black haired, long limbed and quiet until she is not, and her evenings tend to begin at a viewing on Bond Street. Samanta is 27, dark brown worn simply, dressed with an architect's discipline and five minutes from Conduit Street in Mayfair. Both leave a room exactly as composed as they entered it.

Michelle and Vanessa, both 173 cm
Michelle is 27 and curvy, dark brown worn straight, warm and unguarded and in possession of the best posture in the circle. Vanessa, 25 and slim, is sandy brown with balayage, hazel eyed, with a posture that never tightens and an ease that survives any room she is put in. Michelle's evenings are long dinners in SW1, in a room lined with books; Vanessa's are in Notting Hill, at a quiet table where three hours pass without ever seeming long.

Angelika and Patricia, both 172 cm
Angelika is 24 and athletic, with long black hair straight past the shoulders, brown eyes and a swimmer's line. She keeps her evenings in Mayfair, likes to be seated by half past seven, and would rather walk than take a cab. Patricia is 28 and slim, her long hair an auburn brown, her eyes brown, and her coats the best in the circle. Her evenings are in Belgravia, planned two or three days ahead and never improvised.

Which of the nine
Choose by what the evening needs. Violetta and Samanta are the most formal and suit a room where you are known. Stacy and Karolina suit an evening with something to see first, a play or a viewing. Milena and Michelle are the warmest, Milena later at night and Michelle over a long dinner. Vanessa is the easiest company anywhere, Angelika the one to walk with, and Patricia the one to plan with.
