Auburn: three women, and three entirely different reds
Auburn is difficult to wear and impossible to be discreet about, which is why so few women here have it and why the three who do are the easiest in the circle to pick out across a room.
One wears it deep and wavy. One wears it dark and red and long ago stopped toning it down for anybody. The third wears it brown enough that the auburn only shows when a lamp catches it.

Lea: auburn waves at 161 cm, hazel eyed
Lea is 23 and petite, the auburn in long waves of the deep red brown that only ever looks accidental. Her voice is pitched low so that people lean in, and she has certainly noticed as much. She keeps her evenings inside Belgravia, in a small upstairs room where the noise stays downstairs where it belongs. Houses are her subject, and a walk along the terraces afterwards comes with the history of every door on them, delivered as though it were fresh gossip.

Luna: dark auburn red at 171 cm, curvy
Luna is 22, the youngest of the circle, and the red is a dark auburn she gave up trying to be quiet about years ago. Brown eyes, which surprises people who expect green. She dresses in strong single colours and has an excellent instinct for adding nothing else at all. Her evening is a bar seat in Mayfair rather than a table, from eight, watching the drinks trolley make its way round, and then the small streets behind it. Music is what she cares about, and she would rather have one long evening than two short ones.

Patricia: auburn brown at 172 cm, slim
Patricia is 28 and hers is the quietest of the three, brown until the light finds the red in it. She is exacting about everything that deserves it and very funny on the subject of being exacting. Her evenings happen down a mews in Belgravia, within a few streets of her own front door, at a small dining room with a wine list she treats seriously. She likes an evening settled two or three days ahead rather than arranged on the day.

Three reds on three different frames
The colour is not the only difference between them. Lea is petite at 161 cm and the only one of the three with hazel eyes; Luna is curvy at 171 and Patricia slim at 172, and both have brown eyes. Lea dresses softly, in a fine knit and a long coat; Luna in deep single colours with sleeves rather than straps; Patricia in narrow, sharp things and the best coats in the circle.

Which of the three
Lea and Patricia both live in Belgravia and might share a street, yet they suit quite different evenings. Choose Lea for three unhurried hours in a small room, with the conversation growing sharper as it goes. Choose Patricia when you want the evening planned properly and a serious dinner at the centre of it. Luna is the one for a bar, for music and for a later start, and the one of the three least likely to be overlooked in any room.
